A foot valve is a specialized type of check valve installed at the bottom end of a pump suction line, submerged in the liquid source (tank, sump, or well). Unlike standard check valves which can be mounted anywhere along the pipeline, foot valves are purpose-built for suction lift applications—they allow water to flow upward into the pump while preventing backflow when the pump stops, thereby maintaining pump prime and eliminating the need for constant re-priming. The integrated strainer on the inlet side filters out debris, sand, and other solids, preventing clogging and damage to pumps, valves, and downstream equipment.
